Casino asking for a bank statement: what to send

A Bank Statement request is the first time a casino stops being a website, and starts acting like a bank. The licence compels it to act in this capacity. This guide analyses the Gambling Commission rules and the document pages for all ten casinos we review so you know what completes a valid request, what gets sent, what needs to be redacted, and the potential costs of a refusal.

Why a casino asks for a bank statement

Three obligations sit behind every request - confirming who you are, confirming the money is legitimate, and confirming you can afford your requested balance. A statement is able to fulfil all three obligations, and therefore, is the most requested document by casinos.

The Verification of Client Identity obligation is written into licence condition 17.1.1. Each remote licensee must "obtain and verify information in order to establish the identity of a customer before that customer is permitted to gamble", which includes the customer's name, address and date of birth. Most accounts complete this requirement during the account sign up process. In NetBet's help page, they cite three reasons the automatic check fails. These are having a card registered to a previous address, not being on the electoral roll and/or having no credit file at all. After the check fails, NetBet requests documents.

The duties representing money come from an anti-money laundering law and the customer interaction code of the Commission. Sky's source-of-funds page is worded by the operator as "Similarly, to banks, part of this includes collecting customer information for identification, verification and know your customer checks." Monopoly Casino is more straight forward with the same message as this says "all other gambling operators in the UK will be asking you for the same information at some point."

None of this stereotypes or suspects you. The Commission's dedicated statement says businesses "use a variety of techniques to profile customers which can help to indicate that a customer is gambling with money they do not have," and this is done through a statement which satisfies the request.

The three kinds of request

The email usually asks for "documents". Which documents is determined by which of the three checks being carried out. It is worth identifying which of the three checks are being carried out before sending any documents.

Identity 1. Identity and address Photo ID plus one proof of address. A bank statement is one option among many here, and the first page is usually enough. MrQ says a screenshot of the first page "is all we need" at this stage.
Ownership 2. Payment method ownership Proof that the card or account you deposit from is yours. A card photo with the middle digits covered, or for a virtual card a statement showing your name and a deposit to the casino. BetMGM even supplies an email template for asking your bank for a proof-of-ownership letter.
Source of funds 3. Source of funds Full statements, usually three months, showing income arriving and deposits leaving, plus payslips or a tax return. This is the request people mean when they say a casino "wants my bank statement", and it is the one with restrictions attached while it runs.

The key indicator is the word "full". There are several workarounds to satisfy the first two checks. The request for the whole statement in PDF, or for payslips, means that you are undergoing a source-of-funds review and our affordability checks guide describes the focus of this review.

Sapphire document with a gold wax seal: what a UK casino may ask you to prove

What a casino is allowed to ask for

The Commission has said many times that it does not publish a list. What it does publish is a rule regarding the timeframe and that is the important rule.

"Our rules say that a gambling business can't ask you to prove your age and identity as a condition of withdrawing your money if they could have asked you at an earlier point. However, there may be occasions where a gambling business can only ask you for information at that time in order to fulfil legal obligations."

Gambling Commission, Age, ID and financial verification

The guide is brief on documents and says, "We don't say which types of information gambling businesses should ask for. If you're unhappy about the information you have been asked to provide, you should contact the company directly." It says that a company may request details about household bills, that a request for a selfie may be made when fraud is suspected, and that companies will look for "irregular income patterns in your account, such as a pending house sale".

To be frank, a licensed casino may request any and every document that may provide details on identity, source of the money, and affordability. What it may not do is hold a withdrawal and then request a document that it could have requested anytime earlier. The same condition says that prior to a deposit, a licensee "should inform customers what types of identity documents or other information the licensee may need", which basically explains why all casinos cited have help pages listing them.

What to send

Delays tend to stem from the format rules the most. Every casino on the list states the same four things in different terms, and MrQ states it outright, "Most delays come down to documents not being submitted correctly."

  1. A PDF from your banking app, not a photo of the screen. BetMGM calls the downloaded PDF "the easiest way to obtain the full, correct document." Monopoly, MrQ and BetVictor all accept official digital statements and all reject cropped or edited images.
  2. All corners and edges. Sky, MrQ and LiveScore agree that documentation should show edge to edge. No sections should be omitted.
  3. Should be dated within three months. Sky and Paddy Power allow six for address proof, but BetVictor, BetMGM, Monopoly, MrQ and LiveScore say three. Paddy Power say the date should be the printed statement date, "we do not accept transaction date."
  4. Should match account details. Name and address must be account details as registered on the account. If your have changed your name, Sky and BetVictor request marriage certificate or deed poll.
  5. Should match bank statement showing the source of funds. BetMGM requires three months showing "salary payments, alongside deposits made to BetMGM", and states that if your salary lands in a different account, "both statements are required." Monopoly wants the statement that "shows both your regular income and deposits on the site."

Digital banks count. Paddy Power says "traditional bank statements as well as prepaid/digital banks are accepted e.g. Revolut, Monzo etc". MrQ accepts joint-name bills. LiveScore accepts a page from your online banking, as long as it includes a name, the bank, sort code, account number, and a date.

What to black out, and what not to

Casinos tell you to hide some numbers and will reject a document if you hide others. The published rules provide enough consistency to follow.

Each of these casinos claims that documents are sent to a dedicated team and are held under their privacy policy. MrQ states that due to regulatory retention, which runs "at least 5 years", anything you send is kept for this length of time.

Open banking instead of PDFs

Two of the ten now include a way to entirely avoid statements. You approve a one off share of the information by logging in to your online banking, and the casino reads the information they require.

MrQ refers to its process ClearStake, "powered by Nuapay, an FCA-authorised payment institution". You provide this option when asked to verify your finances, and the process is the same as it would be for MrQ, but for BetMGM's Kreditz, which it calls "the quickest way" to complete a source of funds check.

Both companies maintain their document verification option. MrQ states "If you'd prefer not to use it, you can provide documents instead". The tradeoff is speed for detailed information. A PDF shows the casino your banking activity for three months. An open banking link shows whatever is shown to you by the permission screen, so read that screen before you approve it.

The Commission believes that this route will grow. The Commission's announcement in July 2026 states that most high-spending customers will be assessed for financial risk using credit reference data without the need for any supporting documentation, and generally states that in these cases, "open banking or requesting documents" will be the last resort.

What happens if you refuse

You can. Every casino that addresses this question follows the same procedure: the request remains outstanding, and the account remains restricted until the request is met.

"If you do not wish to send documentation, it is your right to choose, and we completely respect this decision. However, we may apply restrictions."

Monopoly Casino help, Source of Funds Verification Process: Common Questions

The restrictions are absolute. Monopoly's enhanced verification page states that the casino "reserve[s] the right to withhold deposits and/or winnings until we are able to satisfactorily complete the enhanced verification process". MrQ states that while it waits "deposits or withdrawals may be paused" and "your account may remain restricted". BetVictor states that a restricted account is unable to deposit, withdraw or "place bets or wagers using bonus or real funds". BetMGM states that a request for an occupation is to be responded to within 7 days, and a request for source of funds is to be responded to within 30 days, or restrictions will be applied.

Refusing the request does not make the money disappear. Your balance is not impacted and the Commission retains its rule against last minute requests for identification. If a withdrawal request is being held pending a request that the casino could have made at any time, the withdrawal pending guide provides information on whom to contact and the won't pay out guide provides information on the appropriate complaint.

When they may ask, and when they may not

The one thing that works in your favour is the timing. Everything else is about what the casino knew and when.

  • Before you can gamble. Your identity must be verified by ID. If your electronic check fails, you need to submit documents, and you will need to gamble later.
  • After you sign up. MrQ's page states, "our licence requires ongoing checks, not just a one-off verification at sign-up". LiveScore indicates periodic re-verification with a prompt at login. Coral says "routine checks on accounts".
  • After a certain amount. Source-of-funds reviews are triggered after spending reaches a certain level. In the approximation of the Financial Risk Assessment by the Commission, this will mean a threshold of £5,000 net deposits in a 24 hour period. In other words, in the next stage, this will mean a threshold of £1,000 net deposits in a 24 hour period or £3,000 net deposits in a 90 day period.
  • At withdrawal, only if it could not have been asked earlier. As per the Commission, a business that delays a withdrawal for insufficient ID "may be in breach of Licence Condition 17" and "may be subject to regulatory action". Fast withdrawal casinos have published payout times. This assumes a verified account. An account that remains unverified has to wait with the documents.

Keep the request email. It describes the documents needed and the deadline. Referencing it is recommended rather than guessing. If the request is for a first page and a picture of the card, send it right away. If the request is for three months of statements, then read the affordability guide, and send what was requested only.

A source-of-funds request is a casino asking whether the money is yours to lose. If the honest answer is uncomfortable, that is the moment to stop rather than to find the document.
